Cape Point Tours, The Lighthouse

Cape Point Lighthouse

Our Cape Point Tours now arrive at the main attraction. Here guests can view the lighthouse, have a coffee, do some Cape Town souvernir shopping or even have lunch.

The first lighthouse at Cape Point was finished in 1859 and today it still proudly stands roughly 249 m above sea level. Today it is used to control and monitor other lighhouses along the coast of Cape Town and South Africa. Take the funicular tours to the top or join one of the many walking tours.

Two peaks can be seen at Cape Point of which one is larger. The peak which stands highest is where the older lighthouse was built. A funicular (elevator) named 'The Flying Dutchman' takes guests up to just below the older lighthouse.

The funicular is for the clients own account and is not included in the tariff of our Cape Point Tours. Journeys can be booked as a return or one way journey, for those feeling they would like to walk down.

The new lighthouse is at a lower altitude, simply because the older light was seen too early by sea farers and some of them approached too early. Also, fog around Cape Point and Cape Town sometimes obstructed the old lighthouse. A ship by the name of Lusitania crashed here in the early nineties and the decision was made to erect a new lighthouse.

The new Cape Point lighthouse provides the strongest light in South Africa.
